Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Vacation, all I ever wanted...

Now that summer is in full swing here… and vacations are coming up, let’s talk about what you’re packing to take on vacation.

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers.  Join the fun by checking out the  Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And don't forget to check out Modly Chic - it's such a great blog.

1.      When it comes to packing for vacation what’s your mantra?

If it fits, bring it. I am a chronic overpacker. I usually end up begging my husband to sit on our suitcase so I can zip it closed. I always curse myself when I arrive at my vacation destination, because not only do I end up not wearing 70% of what I pack, but I bring so
much that there's often no room in my suitcase to buy new things while I'm away.

Yesterday I bought a gorgeous vintage 1950's Samsonite suitcase at an estate sale, and I'm hoping its small proportions help restrain me when packing for a trip.

2.      What are your must packs?

Technically, my must packs are things I know I won't be able to buy at my vacation destination. That included any medication, special books, and my jewelry. As far as clothing goes, for spring and summer I make sure to pack dresses, a pair of cutoff shorts, a few tee shirts, a pair of jeans, a cardigan, and one or two "nice" outfits for evenings out. Throw in three pairs of flat and platforms sandals and I'm off.

3.      What are you happy to leave behind?

Honestly, I'm happy to leave my workout gear at home. Running is a big part of my life, but I strongly believe that unless you're a Kenyan long-distance runner training for a marathon there is not need to pack your sneakers, sports bras and tanks. They take up too much valuable suitcase space, and you're probably going to doing a lot of walking while engaged in touristy things anyway.

4.      Any packing secrets that help you get everything into one suitcase?

When packing, I make sure to pack my heaviest, most bulky garments (such as jeans and sweaters) on the bottom of my suitcase, and layer from there. Rolling shirts prevents wrinkles and saves space, as does laying skirts flat. If I'm packing dresses I turn them inside out - this prevents their zippers from getting caught on anything else in my suitcase. Cosmetics and hair care products always go in Zip-Loc bags in case something spills.

5.      Beach reading… what are you taking with you to read in the sand?

I just finished 22 Britannia Road and thought it would make the perfect beach read. The last time I went to NYC I brought Anthropology of an American Girl along with me, which I can best describe as a blend between Catcher in the Rye and Portrait of a Lady. Both of these books are intense and lengthy, which is exactly what I'm looking for in a book while on vacation.

(Don't miss my giveaway for a TIKKR watch and extra band - so great for summer!)

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Hair care

This week, fashion Beauty Friend Friday is focused on hair care. I'm not much of a hair girl - I haven't had long hair since I was in middle school! - and I'm really intrigued to read what other bloggers have to say about the subject. We've talked about going the all-natural route when it comes to hair care, but we’ve never discussed our usual routines. So here goes…

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers. Find out more about the group by checking out the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And don't forget to check out Modly Chic - it's such a great blog.

1.      How often do you get your hair cut?

I get a haircut approximately every five weeks, and even then it's just a trim to neaten things up. Despite being a pixie, my hair looks best when it's a bit grown out. I suppose it's a shaggy pixie.

2. Do you go to the same stylist each time, try someone new, go to the cheap hair cutting chains or live it up in a salon?

I go to the same stylist every time. I've been going to Toni and Guy for years, and though I believe every stylist there is probably great, I like to stay loyal to one hairdresser. She understands what I want and always gives me a consistently great haircut. And she's not too chatty. Nothing is worse than having to make small talk while getting a hair cut. I like that time to relax, read a magazine, and let my mind wander.

3. Do you color your hair? How often? What’s your natural color?

I do color my hair myself, over my bathroom sink every four weeks with good old Loreal Preference. I started going grey my senior year of high school and began coloring with henna. That was my gateway drug, which led to Nice and Easy and finally Loreal. I went through a brief phase when I had it colored professionally, but I just can't justify the $100+ expense when that money can go towards more worthy causes. Such as thrifting. My hair has been all colors - super dark brunette, white blond, strawberry blonde, burgundy and now a bright orangey red. I haven't seen my natural color in close to twenty years, but if I recall correctly it's brown with very faint red highlights. At this point, I suspect I'm approximately 80% grey. And I'm only 36. Le sigh.

4. The one thing you always do to keep your hair looking great is:

Not wash it every day! Red hair is really challenging to maintain - the colors fades easily and it can get pretty brassy. Washing it every other day helps maintain the color. It still fades faster than when I was a brunette, but I think it helps. I also occasionally use a color-depositing shampoo every now and then, but I'm not thrilled with the residue it leaves on my hair. I think it makes it look a little greasy - ick. I actually did a post about the care and feeding of a redhead here.

5. What hair trend do you love and wish you could rock?

I will probably always dream of having long hair, simply because I just don't have it and probably never will. In college I was friends with a girl who had long, stick straight, thick hair that cascaded down her back to her waist. I still lust over her hair. I daydream of ponytails and the pervasive "blogger bun."But I don't have the patience to grown my hair out. And being a mom to three doesn't really permit the time and energy required to maintain such a crowning glory.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Blog pet peeves (with a rebuttal)

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers. Find out more about the group by checking out the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And don't forget to check out Modly Chic - it's such a great blog.

This week's Fashion Beauty Friend Friday questions are inspired by a post by Beautifully Invisible entitled ‘The 10 things that drive me crazy about your blog.’ Though blogging is by nature an incredibly personal activity, the public nature of it forces some attention on appealing content and design. However, what I consider attractive and tasteful might not be the same as what another blogger believes. Thus, I'm extremely hesitant to behave as if I have any right to subject my opinion on anyone else's blog.

I hold fast to the philosophy that regardless of public opinion, you ultimately need to make yourself happy. If you like lots of white space, few photos and an emphasis on writing (as I do), more power to you. Or if you prefer many pics, buttons galore and short descriptions, then you should embrace it. That's what blogging with courage means to me. Your blog is a reflection of you. It exists to make you happy. None of us are in a position to dictate how a blog "should" look. Your blog does not exist to make me happy, and naming the things that irritate me about it is kind of ridiculous.

Okay. That being said, instead of listing my blog pet peeves, here's a list of blog qualities that I find inspiring and refreshing:

A simple, clean design: I'm a fan of white space and a clean, straightforward design. I believe it makes a blog look focused and keeps the emphasis on the content of the blog itself. A clean design puts emphasis on the blog's pictures and words, and ensures the attention of readers.

A stable layout: Some bloggers are fantastic at HTML and graphic design. They spend hours constructing and editing and updating their blog. Personally, I like stability and consistency. I like being able to find previous posts without difficulty, email the blog author easily, and locate a blogroll without getting lost. I understand the need to keep things fresh, but too much change makes me confused.

Working links and buttons: I've found so many fantastic blogs just by scrolling through a blogroll. In fact, when I have the time, exploring new blogs is one of my favorite activities. This is why working links and buttons are so important.

Too many pics: Fashion is a terrific tool through which we can be creative, and I get so inspired by the outfit pics posted from my favorite bloggers. My favorite bloggers include four to five pics per outfit post, all with different angles highlighting specific attributes. Too many pics makes me a little overwhelmed.

Proper grammar and spelling: I'm a writer, and correct grammar and spelling are important to me. A beautifully written, eloquent post immediately draws me in and makes me want to read more. As a writer I understand how important proper grammar, spelling and punctuation are in ensuring the legitimacy of my own blog, and I appreciate it when a blogger takes the time to spell-check and reread their post.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Outside Influences

A few weeks ago, Fashion Beauty Friend Friday talked about blogging inspirations. So many people referenced other fashion bloggers as huge inspiration. But there are many
other factors that influence us. This week we're exploring fashion inspiration beyond the blogging world.

My bedside table: Fashion books, vintage 1960's church hat, and thrifted 1950's glasses. My life in a nutshell.

1.  What magazines do you subscribe to?

I am a long-time subscriber to Lucky, InStyle and Glamour magazines, and Nylon through my iPad, though these magazines have less and less of an influence over my daily style with each day. I used to stare longingly at the mailbox each month, waiting on baited breathe for each new issue to arrive. But now that I have so many blogs in my Google Reader to keep me informed I barely use my magazines as a reference. I will say that Lucky Magazine remains my favorite, though. They're consistently ahead of the trends and I appreciate that they feature street style. I've also learned a lot about new products from their beauty section.

2. Do you watch any fashion TV shows?

The only fashion TV show I watch is Project Runway. Oh, my love for that show is never ending.  I own every season on DVD and can talk about the contestants and challenges for hours. Make an outfit out of items from a party goods store? Create a dress from recycled materials? I'm there. Project Runway invokes urges for me to learn to sew, though there is no doubt that my attempts would only result in a needle through my hand and painful blood transfusions. A sewer I am not. But I can live vicariously through each season.

3. Beyond blogs, what websites do you frequent for fashion inspiration?

I recently got a Pinterest account and have just begun teaching myself how to use it. Pinterest seems to be a great way to gather style inspiration, and I'm excited to figure out how to become more active. I also regularly read the Style section of The New York Times. In addition, Style.com and Shopstyle.com offer interesting and relevant articles about runway trends, fashion news and designer profiles.

4. Advertisements play a huge role in forming public opinion about a product or brand… what ads do you like and why?

I can't say there are any fashion or beauty ads that resonate with me as far as developing a brand following. Though those Jack In The Box commercials crack me up. Not that I eat fast food or anything...

5. Do you own any fashion books?

I am slowly building a substantial library on books regarding vintage, thrift and general fashion. My favorite book regarding vintage clothing is New York Fashion: The Evolution of American Style by Caroline Rennolds Milbank. I bought it used from Amazon and it is a tremendous resource on the history of modern American fashion. Other favorite books for vintage shopping include The Little Guide to Vintage Shopping by Melodie Fortier; Shopping for Vintage: The Definitive Guide to Vintage Shopping by Funmi Odulate; and Vintage Hats & Bonnets 1770-1970 Second Edition by Susan Langley. Currently, I'm going deeper in learning more about the history of fashion and am reading a college textbook titled Survey of Historic Costume. I found it in Half Priced Books and love reading it every night.

I also recently read Nina Garcia's book The One Hundred; Tim Gunn's A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style; and Rachael Zoe's Style A To Zoe: The Art To Fashion, Beauty, and Everything Glamorous.I'd recommend Nina Garcia's over the rest.

Do you have any fashion or style books you'd recommend? I'd love to check them out!

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Shoes

This week Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is focusing on shoes. I must admit that I don't consider myself a shoe person (though I own enough to make my husband roll his eyes when I come home with a new pair.) Typically, I prefer to spend my money on a vintage sequined top or thrifted handbag.  However, most statistics on the shopping habits of women conclude that women ages 13-16 may own about 15 pair of shoes including sneakers; older woman aged 16-21 own 25-40 pairs; and woman ages 25-50 own  anywhere from 40-60 pair of shoes.

Glamour.com wrote recently about this here: http://www.glamour.com/fashion/b.... Original study was conducted by gocompare.com, who surveyed 3,000 women. Here are some interesting points from the study:
  • The average woman will buy 469 pairs of shoes in her lifetime.
  • She'll spend $25,000 overall.
  • This is $53 per pair.
  • The average woman has about 19 pairs of shoes at any given time
  • These 19 pairs include three pairs with heels, six pairs of either flip-flops, sandals, ballet pumps or wedges, three pairs of boots and four pairs of dressy shoes for nights out.
  • Women also have two pairs of work shoes and another two or so 'random' purchases.
  • Girls buy their first pair without mom at 14, then seven pairs a year for the rest of their lives
I sympathize with all women who laugh (then grimace) at the "19 pairs" average. I have at least double this number in pairs of shoes right now, and that's just running through a mental list. In heels alone, you have round toe, peep toe, pointy toe, leather, suede, patent, black, brown, silver, nude. These are all staples! And let's talk sandals - dressy, flat, t-strap, gladiator, espadrilles. What about boots? And you've got to have work shoes, party shoes, happy hour shoes, athletic shoes, summer shoes, winter shoes. Let's forgive ourselves for shoe overload. And boyfriends/husbands, we don't need your grief.

A bit of my shoes collection
1.What is your go-to pair of shoes?

Answering this question is like asking me to chose which one of my three kids I love the most. It's impossible. And it depends on the season. In fall and winter I live in my tall boots. Two pairs are vintage and I fdound them while thrifting; I also have a pair of vintage cowboy boots I thrifted for $8 that I adore. They're well-constructed, soft and broken in. My brown Frye Heath boots are probably my favorite - I bought them on eBay for less than $100 and they're versatile, comfortable, and perfectly worn in. In spring I like peep-toe wedges, and in summer I love my high heeled strappy clogs. They're the only heels I can wear without writhing in pain.

2. What goes into your shoe buying decisions?

Comfort is my number one priority when buying a pair of shoes. If they're not comfortable I won't want to wear them, and my purchase will be a total waste of money. I also look for leather shoes - they hold up much better than canvas or faux leather - and a padded insole.

3. The majority of the shoes in your closet are what color?

Most of my shoes are in neutral colors - black or tan leather, gold and bronze. This spring I really would like to find some colorful sandals, especially in yellow. I see so many bloggers wearing rightly colored sandals and wedges and they always look great!

 4. When it comes to design shoes what are your favorite brands and why?

Another impossible question! I really love my Frye boots and shoes. They're exceptionally well-made and last forever. I have a pair of Frye cowboy boots that I purchased almost ten years ago, and they still look amazing. I also love my Miz Mooz wedges, my H&M clogs, my Lucky Brand platform sandals, my 6x6 platform booties, and my entire collection of vintage ballet flats (which I rarely wear, because I'm afraid of ruining them!)

5. If price wasn’t an issue, you’d own which shoe?

Oh lord.  Honestly,  suspect most will answer this question with a description of some astronomically-priced Christian Louboutain or Manolo stiletto. But I just can't tolerate wearing high heels. I think they're gorgeous, but just not practical for me. However, I would love to own these Jeffrey Campbell red t-strap platform sandals. OR these Frye oxfords. OR these Valentino bow espadrilles.

What are your favorite shoe brands? Are you planning to buy anything new for spring and summer? I would love to know!

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Fitness

This week, Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is focused on fitness. As someone with little to no coordination and almost zero athletic ability, I've always been curious about those women who are able to tolerate getting sweaty without having a full-scale nervous breakdown (such as I am accustomed to.) I'm intrigued by these women, these warriors of the gym and running paths, who seem to glide by almost effortlessly in a blissful state of endorphin rush. I'm a little excited to read the other responses to this week's questions.

1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why?

I am the very last person you would consider athletic. Coordination is not my strong suit. Occasionally I fall over when tying my shoes. And I feel awkward and self-conscious at the gym. In the past, I've tried to work around these weaknesses by avoiding team sports. In college I was an equestrian, which provided a surprising good workout. I was also involved on the crew team, filling the role of coxswain in the skull. The cox does absolutely no rowing, exerting themselves by screaming at the team to keep them coordinated. Oh, and the cox steers the boat by pulling gently on a little lever. But I could tell everyone I was on the crew team, and in my head that counted for something.

In the last year, motivated by a desire to become more muscular, I've discovered running.  And I love it. Running makes me feel strong, and powerful, and accomplished. When I run my brain relaxes, and all those little nagging worries are drowned out by the pounding of my feet and rhythm of my breathing. And I've grown to embrace my sweaty body after a run - it's proof that I've conquered a workout. Running is a surprise stress reliever, and that's the biggest reward.

2. Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image?

When I'm running regularly I definitely feel better about my body. I spent so many years hating how I looked and punishing myself through starvation and purging behaviors. Settling into a workout routine makes me feel more self-confident, and has encouraged me to look at myself in a totally different light. Because of running, I'm a lot stronger than I thought I was. I'm physically capable of more than I dreamed. And it feels really good.

3. When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk, what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion?

I suppose I take both into account when choosing my workout wear. I really like Nike's Tempo running shorts, and purchased them in bulk at the Nike Factory Store near my house. They're comfortable, lightweight and don't ride up. I also like Old Navy's long sports tanks with a sports bra underneath. I like to coordinate my tanks with my shorts, but I go so far as wearing makeup or doing my hair before working out. I do have one rule regarding athletic apparel, though: It should remain at the gym. Personally, I would never pull on workout clothes to grab something to eat or run errands.

4. Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness?

I'm not entirely sure. Ever since Jane Fonda made aerobics popular back in the eighties, there's been a certain push for women to work out. I don't see anything wrong with that as long as exercising is something you do for you, rather than to impress your friends or fit in with those around you. In addition, working out should always been done in moderation. It should not dominate your life at the sacrifice of relationships and other activities. And, as with most things, it shouldn't be an obsession. I've met women who worked out excessively and developed serious injuries as a result. Balance is key.

5.  Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal?

My goal is simple: I'd like to follow a regular fitness routine that I enjoy. In the past working out has either been something I dreaded or did to excess. Running regularly, and looking forward to my runs, is a simple goal that makes the most sense to me. Perhaps I'll run a 10k someday, or even a half-marathon. But right now I don't feel the need to do so.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Inspiration

This week, Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is focusing on inspiration. Whether you find inspiration in music, friends, books, art, or where you live, there's no shortage of opportunities to spark creativity. I'm excited to learn how other bloggers find their inspiration and looking forward to reading posts about the topic!

1. Which celebrity (celebrities) do you look to for fashion inspiration?

I find inspiration in a number of celebrities, all of whom have a very distinctive sense of personal style. I really love Rachel Zoe's seventies clothes and accessories. She's encouraged me to consider flared jeans, oversized blazers, faux fur, large framed sunglasses and loads of jewelry. I admire Dita Von Teese's ability to blend vintage clothing with modern touches. She always looks absolutely gorgeous, and her vintage dress and hat collections are pure genius. Cate Blanchett continues to to inspire me with her brave approach towards fashion - she wears pieces straight off the runway and on her, they make sense. And Christina Hendricks' red hair inspired me to color my own!

2. When it comes to your own personal style, what inspires you?

I'm inspired by so many things - fashion history, books,  friends, music, the state I live in (go Texas!) and pop culture.  As a lover of vintage and thrifted pieces, I especially appreciate clothing from a historical perspective. Particular decades in fashion always inspire me, but especially the feminine silhouettes of the fifties, colorful and exuberant fashions of the eighties, and 1970's disco glam. I almost always have my nose in a book about fashion, designers, vintage clothing, or accessories. Of course, I'm incredibly inspired by other fashion bloggers as well. I often scroll through my blogroll to help me figure out how to wear a particular item. Reading blogs has really helped me define my own sense of personal style.

3. How do you hope to inspire your readers?

Since I started my blog, my mission has always been to encourage women to dress with courage and shop where they feel comfortable. That translates into wearing what you want, not what you think you should because of your age/background/geographical location. Dressing with courage also means shopping where you wish, may it be at thrift stores, vintage boutiques, and every place in between. So many women hold themselves back from really exploring fashion because they think they shouldn't wear skinny jeans, or elaborate outfits, or lots of accessories. I encourage my readers to really embrace their own individual sense of style. And as a woman in my thirties with three kids, I prove that age has nothing to do with how one should dress. I wear what I want, and shop where I want.

4. Outside the realm of fashion, who/what inspires you?

I'm inspired by the people I encounter while exploring Dallas. It's amazing who you can meet, and what you can learn, just by introducing yourself and being friendly. Since I've started devoting more time to thrifting and vintage, I've meet some wonderful shop owners who have taught me more about developing my own sense of personal style,  and collecting vintage clothing. And they're so much fun to hang out with! I get a lot of my writing inspiration from whatever book I happen to be reading at the moment, though I especially love David Sedaris, Sloane Crosley, and Augusten Burroughs. If it's snarky, sarcastic, and makes me laugh, I'm all over it.

5. And since Idol is ending… Which songs inspire you?

Oh gosh...this one is tough. Different music inspires me during different times. When I'm getting ready for a night out, I listen to a lot of Jay-Z, Eminem, Nicki Minaj,  Beyonce, and The Black Keys. While blogging, I like quieter music from Greg Laswell, The Civil Wars, Ray LaMontagne, Regina Spektor, and Iron & Wine. And every now and then I break out some Elton John, Brittney Spears, Morrissey, Led Zeppelin, Jem, The Rolling Stones, and Lady Gaga.

(Now I ask you- what are you inspirations? What celebrities do you look towards for inspiration? And what music gets you going?)

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Gratitude

Today marks the one-year anniversary of Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday! It has grown from 7 bloggers to more than 630 members, including several men. According to the creator of FBFF, Katy of Modly Chic, the community has helped one blogger through a plagiarism case. It has assisted new bloggers with site design and business card selection. And it has debated the merits of Disqus commenting system and switching to WordPress.  The meme has seen the creation of additional theme-related memes like Everybody Everywhere and Fashion Feminist Bloggers.

As a result of the one-year anniversary we are answering questions about gratitude – giving props to those that don’t normally get the credit.

1.  When it comes to me personally – I owe a lot of who I am to: Without a doubt I’m going to say major credit goes to my husband. Not only does he take my photos every day, and is responsible for my genuinely happy smiles in each of them, but he continues to help me embrace who I am through my posts. He's always there to support my writing, whether through proofreading or objective criticism, and he helps me tackle those lingering negative thoughts when I'm struggling against insecurities regarding my appearance.

2. When it comes to me professionally – I owe a lot of who I am to: In high school, I had the "pleasure" of being in Mrs. Pollard's AP English class. There was nothing pleasurable about Mrs. Pollard. Tough, snarky, nit-picky, and critical, Mrs. Pollard challenged everything about my writing, from grammar to word choice to subject matter. Nothing was good enough for her high standards. I grew to despise both this woman and the class. It wasn't until I was in college that I realized how much she helped improve my writing. I learned to pay more attention to grammar rules and double and triple and quadruple check my work when proofreading. By sophomore year I was writing for my college newspaper, and my work never would have been accepted if it wasn't for Mrs. Pollard's instruction.

3. When it comes to the art of blogging, I’m grateful to these people for helping me through some rough spots: When I'm feeling down about my traffic being lower than other bloggers, or having less followers, I always think of the wise advice given to me by Erin of Work With What You've Got. Erin reminded me that obsessing about the stats of other bloggers was a fruitless cause, that I would never really know what made them so popular, and to get over it. This wise advice always helps me recover from moments of inadequacy.

4. One blogging challenge I’m grateful happened because it made me stronger was… As a woman in recovery from a 20 year-battle with anorexia, taking my photos every day is a constant challenge. But I continue to do it, fighting the little voices in my head questioning my worthiness as a style blogger. I'm grateful that I can overcome insecurities about my body and appearance, and put myself out there for the world to see. That's something I never thought I'd be able to do.

5. To my readers, I’d like to say… THANK YOU!! Thank you for coming back post after post. Thank you for your thoughtful, supportive, and intelligent comments. Thank you for thinking I have something here worth reading. Thank you for supporting my fledgling writing career - because of your encouragement, I've submitted posts to online publications and am now getting paid for my writing. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Spring trends

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers.  Join the fun by checking out the  Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And definitely read Modly Chic - it's such a great blog!

What are the top 5 Spring trends that you are looking forward to seeing/sporting this season? (Can be anything from makeup, shoes, accessories, clothing, etc..)

Spring is a tricky season to dress for. It starts off cold, damp and windy, and blossoms into gentle days of mild temperatures and sunny skies. Here  in Dallas we are privy to a very short spring season. It's only early April and temperatures are predicted to be in the nineties both today and tomorrow!

Here are a few of my top spring 2011 trends:

Swedish hasbeens

Platform Clogs: I've posted about my inability to wear heels. Just looking at a pair of stilettos makes my feet spontaneously blister. I have very small feet and a high arch, and it's tough to find a heel that gives me enough support that I don't careen ungracefully into furniture. That's why I'm so excited about the return of platform clogs. I love their chunky heel and supportive platform. It also helps that they usually come with an ankle strap, which gives my feet a bit more support.

Peter Som Spring 2011

High-rise jeans: I'm a short woman. At barely five feet three inches, I'm constantly searching for clothes that make me look taller and leaner. So I'm kind of excited about the return of high-waisted pants and jeans. With a tucked-in or cropped shirt and chunky platform shoe, they'll make my legs look miles long.

Chris Benz spring 2011

Mixed Prints: This trend has been around since the 90's, but it seems to have come full force this spring. During this season's spring fashion week, nearly every designer sent looks based around mixed prints down the runway. It's a tricky look,  but here's a piece of advice: Stick to one or two colors (or a few in the same family) when mixing and matching to avoid the crazy-lady look. I love mixing stripes with florals - it's fun, eclectic, and playful.

Joie high-low maxi dress

Maxi Dresses: I'll be honest - I'm not entirely convinced I can pull this trend off without looking as if I'm drowning in yards of fabric. But I love the easy, effortless look a maxi dress brings.  And belting the dress gives more definition to your waist and more structure to the look. In cooler weather, I'd add a loose cardigan to provide a bit of coverage.

Dior spring 2011 runway

Bright eye makeup: It's only recently that I've become a cosmetics junkie (I blame Erin of Work With What You've Got for this. Thanks Erin. You know what you did.) Adding bold eyeshadow colors such as purple, pink, green, or blue helps enhance eyes and attracts some attention towards your face. This type of makeup requires a lighter touch elsewhere, so I pair bright eyeshadow with nude or light pink gloss.

What are some of your favorite spring trends? And what are some trends you want no part of?

1. Guest posts are a good way to gain new exposure. What do you think is the appropriate way to go about securing a guest spot?

The best way to go about securing a guest post is to express genuinely appreciation for the blog you wish to guest-post on. Establishing communication with the blog's author through frequent comments is a great way to show your interest, and following those comments up with an email expressing interest in guest posting is the ideal way to go. I think sincerity is key.

2. Leaving comments is essential to growing your blog. But how can you leave a comment without coming across as ‘Follow Me. Follow Me!’?

We've all received those short, groveling comments that beg for a follow. I don't think many blog authors takes them seriously. Personally, I don't give a follow-back unless the commenter leaves frequent and thoughtful remarks or questions while commenting.  I work really hard crafting my blog posts, and I genuinely love receiving a thoughtful comment, whether it's complimentary or not. Have something interesting to say to make yourself memorable, and you'll probably end up with a follow back.

3. We’ve all gotten a mass email at one time or another asking for blog exposure, a link exchange, etc… but mass emails don’t work. How do you make your email stand out from the crowd?

I've sever sent out such an email. It feels too much like pandering to me. However, if I did, it would be similar to the suggestions I gave to question 1 above: I'd express appreciation and gratitude to the blog's author, tell them exactly what I enjoyed about their blog, and ask them kindly for their advice regarding what I could improve on my own blog or for their suggestions regarding how to generate more followers/interest. Then I would ask for exposure, either through a guest post or link to one of my posts (if it's relevant to their discussion.) The blogger community is incredibly supportive, and I think we all enjoy helping one another out.

4. In interacting with other bloggers where do you draw the line between seeking support and begging for exposure?

It's all about establishing sincere relationships. Become a follower, leave thoughtful comments, and follow the blogger you admire on Twitter (and/or Facebook.) Open up a line of communication, and follow through. Be polite, be genuine, and look at the relationship like you would a friendship - would you try to take advantage of a friend? This is no different.

5. What’s one rule of engagement error you've made, and how did you remedied it?

I'd like to think I haven't made an errors in engaging other bloggers! Sometimes I think I could be more aggressive in pursuing opportunities to guest blog. As a new blogger I'm still trying to draw followers and promote my blog, and there's no more efficient way to do that than through a guest post on a blog I admire. Perhaps I need to be more brave and ask my favorite blogs if I could guest post - eeek! And maybe I should solicit offers for guest posters on my own blog. It's something to think about.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Feminism

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers.  Join the fun by checking out the  Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And definitely read Modly Chic - it's such a great blog!

1. Do you think there is an incompatibility between feminism and a love for fashion?

Some would argue that there is definitely an incompatibility between fashion and feminism. If you examine the development of fashion trends throughout history, it seems apparent that women have dressed and presented themselves to conform to standards set by the patriarchy (i.e corsets, push-up bras, the demurring fashion of the 1950's.) With the emergence of the fat acceptance movement and plus-size advocates, this mindset is beginning to change. “Feminist writers have consistently argued that a woman’s attempt to cultivate her appearance makes her a dupe of fashion, the plaything of men, and thus a collaborator in her own oppression… Though this wisdom has seldom been open to question as a matter of principle, it has always produced discord at the level of practice,” says Linda Scott an Associate Professor of Women’s Studies at the University of Illinois in her book Fresh Lipstick.

In addition, the fashion industry is largely about money.  Cosmetics, clothes, and other beauty tools are a multi-billion dollar a year industry. Particular brands and styles are promoted because there is money to be made, and profits to be enjoyed. Often there is zero connection between comfort, figure flattery and fashion trends (hello, stilettos.) We live in a culture where for women beauty, success, and glamour have a very high price tag attached, and that to be an accomplished, modern, sexy woman, you have to look the part—in a $4,000 dress and $400 shoes, of course. Some women buy clothes to communicate class and power over other women, establishing competitiveness between them. Our capitalist society encourages this behavior.

However, I believe that embracing femininity is about embracing everything about womanhood, both outside and in. If wearing make-up, flattering clothing and expressing my own unique style through fashion is a way I express my femininity, that's empowering. And isn't that what feminism is all about?

2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion. How do you incorporate every aspect of yourself into your blog?

My blog is a truly honest expression of who I am. I discuss topics that I'm interested in and that I feel others can relate to as well. In my blog, I'm been open about my eating disorder, role as a mom, and importance of fashion and authenticity in regards to who I am. My blog is about embracing our own unique sense of style and shaking off the "should's" - what we should wear, how we "should" present ourselves. It's about being courageous through fashion and style, and that's how I live every day.

3. With the fashion industry still being a male-dominated profession, how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?

I strongly believe that if women dominated the fashion industry, body acceptance would be a priority. It would bring the end to the ultra-thin models that walk down the runways and appear in magazines.  Fashion might become more about comfort and utility than restriction, and about self-expression and individuality rather than trends.

4. How is your self-image and the way you carry yourself informed by your beliefs?

I work really, really hard to accept my flaws, especially in the context of my eating disorder. A large part of my recovery concerns body acceptance and embracing the womanliness of my figure. For years I struggled to restrict the curves I was meant to have. I dressed to hide my figure. Now, I try to not only accept how I look, flaws and all, but show off my curves in a tasteful and flattering way. I believe that establishing a stronger sense of personal style not only permits me to express my femininity, but also makes me feel more empowered and self-confident.

5. Do you think clothing/makeup/hair helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?

Fashion is something that makes me happy. Through thrifted and vintage clothes, I can create a unique sense of personal style that I find deeply gratifying. As I continue to examine fashion and beauty as an individual choice, the more apparent it becomes that these things help communicate the true me.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: In the beginning

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers.  Join the fun and take part in the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And be sure to check out Modly Chic too!

So far, what have been the 5 hardest blogging lessons you’ve learned? What have you learned during this process that helped make you a better blogger as a result?

I'm not sure I can narrow it down to five! I've only been blogging for four months, but I've already learned the hardest lesson - to be authentic and truthful to whom I am.

When I first began blogging I spent too much time examining those other super successful bloggers. I tried to emulate them and figure out what made them so popular. I compared myself to them, questioning what I was doing in regards to how much they'd accomplished. What was their magic formula, I wondered, that got them so many followers? What did they have that I obviously didn't? What made them so desirable? What about them drew in so many readers?

I quickly learned that comparing myself to others was a fruitless and empty mission, and that mu uniqueness was nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it was what set me apart. I am not your typical blogger. I have a lot to say. I enjoy examining fashion and style from a somewhat intellectual and thoughtful perspective. I love writing, and I really enjoy doing research. I am intrigued by what makes the world tick, and I like examining why things are the way they are. An outfit pic accompanied by a few sentences will never be enough for me. That's just how I roll. And that's okay.

If I had to name the five hardest lessons, they'd be:
  1. Stop spending time comparing yourself to other bloggers. It's a fruitless, frustrating activity.
  2. Stay truthful and authentic to who you are. It is your uniqueness that sets you apart and makes your blog stand out from the others.
  3. Don't let blogging overrun your life. Establish a schedule when to write your posts and stick to it.
  4. As a fashion blogger, taking great pics is so important. I upgraded my camera a couple of months ago and what a difference it's made.
  5. The blogging community is smaller than you think. Making connection starts by leaving thoughtful, relevant comments on blogs you follow and inspire you. Ask questions, and tell the blog author you admire them. You'd be surprised how far that can go!

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Finding The Balance

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers.  Join the fun and take part in the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And be sure to check out Modly Chic too!

1. When it comes to prioritizing your life, in what place does blogging fall?

As wife to a husband who travels for work, and full-time mom to three rambunctious children, blogging falls somewhere in between laundry and homework assignments and errands and all the chaos and disorder kids cause. Thankfully, my children are in school during the day so I am able to devote that time to blogging. This explains what my posts focus equally on my writing and what I'm wearing. I really enjoy researching topics for my posts, and I doubt I'd be able to expound as much as I do if I were working outside the home full-time.

2. We all wish we had more free time to dedicate to blogging and all it entails. What are your tricks for taking advantage of the time you do have to be as productive as possible?

When I started blogging four months ago, I quickly realized it was more time-efficient to compose my posts the day before they're published.  Feeling rushed often leads to grammatical and spelling errors. I just don't work well under pressure, so I scribble up a couple of rough drafts the day before, narrow my focus in the evening, and add my pics to the finished post right before publishing it the next morning. Then I start working on the next day's draft.

3. Have you discovered any short-cuts that makes blogging easier or more time efficient?

I recently bought myself an iPad (naturally, right before the new model is due to be released) and I use a note-taking app quite a lot for jotting down ideas as they come. You never know where you'll find inspiration, and having an iPad or pen and notepad handy is the best way to take advantage when inspiration strikes.I also rely on my iPad magazine subscriptions for fashion and style-related articles that I often rely on as a resource for topics to blog about. And I use my iPhone Twitter app all the time to keep in touch with other bloggers - who better to brainstorm with?

4. Do you have an editorial calendar or something similar that helps you plan ahead?

I do...kinda. My blog has regular features that give it a bit of predictability. On Sunday I do a week-in-review post; Thursday I post a new part of my Thrifting 101 series; and Friday is FBFF (of course!) I post every single day, no matter what. Having a weekly schedule of features takes a lot of the pressure off.

 5. If time wasn’t an issue what you would be doing on your blog/for your blog that you aren’t doing now?

If I had my afternoons and evenings free, I'd probably spend time establishing relationships with shop owners and managers in my area. Someday I'd like to have sponsors on my blog, and feature giveaways from local designers and stores. In order to do that, I need to promote my blog more and reach out to businesses I shop at. With my attention devoted to my kids on the evenings and weekends, it's tough for me to really get to know the employees at stores I shop at. Hopefully I can figure out how to make things work.

This week's questions focused on beauty products. I never get to discuss cosmetics and hair products, so answering  these questions was really fun!

1. What's your favorite drug store makeup product and your favorite higher-end product?

I really adore Loreal's Hip high-pigment eyeshadows. Did you know that Loreal and Lancome products are made in the same locations and use the same ingredients? I didn't either. Urban Decay's Potion eyeshadow primer helps the shadows last all day without creasing.

High-end products are harder for me to narrow down. Erin of Work With What You've Got recently introduced me to MAC cosmetics and they've become my crack. Their lipsticks are the bomb (yes, I just said "the bomb", so they must be great.) I love Viva Glam IV, and often wear Viva Glam 1 in  my photos - it's bright, but shows off beautifully. I also swear by MAC's Studio Sculpt foundation, which provides full coverage yet allows my freckles to peek through. Dior blush is a helpful pick-me-up when I'm feeling tired and a bit drab - I recently bought one at thre Dallas Bloggers Meetup and it adds just the right amount of color without being garish.

2. Is there one type of product that is your go-to, can't live without?

Without a doubt, mascara. Without it I look like a strung out insomniac. I use Maybelline's One by One - it makes my lashes defined and adds length without clumping.

3. What's the best hair product you've ever used?

I swear by Toni and Guy's molding paste. Just a little bit gives the perfect amount of definition to my short, layered hair.

4. Fess up, what's the worst beauty look you've tried to rock and look back at now with a little shame or apprehension that you actually did that?

Confession: Five years ago I decided to grown out my hair to shoulder-length and go blond. Big mistake. Huge. I spent a fortune at a high-end salon getting peroxided into an icy white-blond. For a pale girl like myself this was a really unfortunate look. I looked ghostly. And it ended up damaging my hair to the point where I had to chop it off.

5. When it comes to beauty products, we all use the same basic products. What do you use that helps show off your personal flare and personality?

With my red hair, nose piercing and and neck tattoo, I have a very bold look. I like to play it up with pigmented eyeshadows, liner and brighter lipstick. I feel more permission to play things up because my hair is so bright. However, there are occasions when I need to tone things down, and that's much more challenging for me to accomplish.

This week brings the introduction of the FBFF Blog Awards! Each participant is to nominate one blogger for each of the categories below and explain their nomination. The responses will be counted and the top five bloggers named in each category will be decided. Those finalists will then be opened up to a public vote over a couple of weeks!

1. Creative Juices (most creative):I really enjoy Suze of Miss Vinyl Ahoy. Her blog is full of creative and unique takes on fashion and beauty, and she's as authentic as they come. She's also fantastic at mixing prints and colors, and has encouraged me to try out colored tights (which I now love!)

2. The Real Deal (authenticity): Without a doubt, this award should go to Erin of Work With What You've Got. I've had the privilege of spending time with her, and she is just as genuine, sincere and stylish in person as she is on her blog.

3. Spark Notes (most helpful): Kileen of Cute and Little has some really helpful tips regarding blog design and html on her blog. I'm still learning how to navigate through blog design, and her tips are encouraging me to be more courageous when it comes to computer navigation. And Sally of Already Pretty offers such wonderful styling advice and tips on dressing best for your body type.

4. Newbie (best blogger less than a year old): Me! No, just kidding. I really enjoy reading Dwelling and Telling. Linley has only had her blog for a few months, and she's already up to over six hundred followers. That's saying something. Her style is simple, clean and elegant, and she comes across as very genuine and sweet.

5. Can You Hear Me Now (most connected):Without a doubt, this award should go to Kendi of Kendi Everyday. As the creator of the 30x30, she turned a small challenge into a blogger-wide event that unites bloggers across the world. She created a community through which bloggers of all ages and style types can network and learn from one another.

6. If I had a Hammer (best DIY): I really love the DIY's from Love Maegan. From jewelry to clothing, she imprints her unique, Californian sense of style through tutorials that are clear and easy to follow.

7. Tribe Leader (blogger who leads others and brings bloggers together): Gotta go with Indiana of Adored Austin and Gretchen of Gretchen's Closet. Together, they're  organizing the Texas Style Council Conference in March, and I'm thrilled to be attending.

8. Practically Perfect (most fashionable): I love Karla of Karla's Closet. She mixes very high-end items with vintage and mall-store pieces in a real way, and always manages to look impeccable. Her shoes are beyond killer too.

 9. Paint by Numbers (best beauty blogger): My vote is for Keiko Lynn. I adore her makeup tutorials, and she's genius at applying shadows and eyeliner.  I also like The Beauty Look Book for comprehensive make-up and perfume reviews.

10. Renaissance Woman (best all around blogger, fashion, beauty, lifestyle): A tie between Erin of Work With What You've Got and Sydney from The Daybook. Both are authentic, stylish, informative, and unique. They blog about many different topics, include readers on a glimpse into their lives and relationships, and aren't afraid to put their opinions out there.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Body Image

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers.  Join the fun by checking out the  Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And definitely read Modly Chic - it's such a great blog!

This week's FBFF questions really resonated with me. I wasn't intending to get so personal on my blog just quite yet, but thought this would be a good opportunity for you to understand me a bit better beyond what I wear everyday.

1. Since you started blogging has your image of yourself changed?

It's surprising how much my image of myself has changed since I began blogging. Starting my blog was a giant step forward for me personally. I have not shared this before, but I struggled with anorexia and bulimia for over twenty years. My life was largely defined by relapses, hospitalizations, and crippling negative body image. I despised who I was and truly hated how I looked, and tortured myself as a result. The eating disorder completely dominated my life. I can't begin to describe the friends I lost, the pain I felt, and the opportunities I missed out on because I was sick.

My last impatient stay was October 2009, and I have been in solid recovery for approximately a year, the longest I have been healthy since I was a young teenager. Starting my blog was a way for me to truly embrace who I am and prove to myself just how much  strength I have. Just the fact that I can put a pic of myself out into the world is a huge deal, and I'm incredibly proud that I continue to post every day, no matter how crummy I might feel. It's a way for me to reclaim my life.

2. Are you self-conscious about any aspect of yourself? If so, do you
go out of your way to avoid it or do you post it/talk about it anyway?

Honestly, I'm self-conscious about all of me. But I'm working on it. I'm secretly terrified about the coming of spring and summer, because I won't be able to hide under sweaters and jeans and boots. I'm telling myself that I'll take inspiration from other bloggers, keep posting, and get through it. I've never discussed my struggle with anorexia and negative body image, but the cat's out of the bag now. Maybe that's a good thing.

3. Based on how you are feeling now, what do you think the future holds in the evolution of your body image?

I am confident that my body images issues will continue to improve the longer I keep posting. I never thought I'd have 59 followers, and their comments and support mean so, so much. Most days now I can look at my pics and be happy with what I see. That feels really great.

4. Do you photograph yourself for your blog? If so, how do you feel about the experience when you're having your picture taken? If you choose not to post pictures of yourself, what prompted that decision?

My husband takes my photos everyday. I have a personal style blog, and there's no point in posting if I don't include photos. I've gotten much more comfortable with posing - the more pics he takes, the easier it gets. I'm learning to focus on the positives and shut out all those little negative thoughts that run through my head when seeing myself in pics. There is no perfect blogger out there. I'm a real woman, with flaws and curves and the occasional zit. It happens, and that's okay. I don't edit my pics either, so what you see is what you get. It's all authentic Elissa.

5. What would you want every person who struggles with body image to take to heart?

I want to remind everyone that we are all imperfect creatures. In treatment, my very wise therapist told me that when we compare, we inevitably despair. Instead of concentrating on what others look like, and how your body compares to theirs, focus on what makes you unique, talented, and special. This goes so far beyond your appearance. Do what makes you happy, and don't be afraid to speak your true voice. It is our individuality that makes us interesting.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Color Wars

The Friend Friday group by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and join a friendly community of bloggers. Join the fun by checking out the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group. And definitely read Modly Chic - it's such a great blog!

Info on this outfit can be found in this post

1. What color dominates your closet?

Looking through my closet, there's a predominance of blue - blue sweaters, blue button-downs, blue jeans. But I've been expanding out of my blue period recently, and eagerly introducing a lot more colors into my wardrobe. It's been fun!

2. If money weren't an issue how would you change the color emphasis in your closet?

Hmmm...I'm not sure I would change anything. I might consider bringing more black into my closet. Wearing a black top makes my red hair pop even more, and emphasizes the tattoo on my neck. I'm not shy by any means, so anything that helps me stand out more would be great. I'd also spend more on colored and/or patterned tights. I've seen so many bloggers wearing brightly colored tights with their skirts, and they always look great!

3. What is your mantra about mixing colors?

I try to stay in the same color family. I really am not comfortable wearing clashing colors, though  some bloggers manage to pull this off fantastically well. On the other hand, I try to avoid being too matchy-matchy. I have a thing against being over-coordinated - for example, green shoes with a green top and a green bag and green eyeshadow. It squicks me out.

4. For you, how do you incorporate color into your outfits?

I really enjoy bringing color into my personal style through the use of accessories. Just a simple red purse or purple boots (yes, I own purple boots) can help elevate a somewhat tame outfit into something really special.

5. Which blogger(s) do you think do a good job of incorporating color into their wardrobe?

Oh my, what a tough question. I love how Indiana Adams of Adored Austin uses color. And Suze of Miss Vinyl Ahoy. And Erin of Work With What You've Got - she does a great job at pattern-mixing and using color to bring certain outfits together.
